Niagara Falls: The Complete First-Timer Guide

Niagara Falls: The Complete First-Timer Guide

Niagara Falls is not one waterfall but three: Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, plus American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls across the river. The Canadian side faces the best view, which is why almost every first visit starts there.

Which experience to pick

The Hornblower cruise (April to November) takes you to the base of Horseshoe Falls and is the most memorable hour you can spend here, provided you accept being soaked. Journey Behind the Falls runs year round and puts you in tunnels behind the curtain, with two outdoor platforms. The Skylon Tower gives the aerial photograph; Table Rock, right beside the falls, is free and already close enough to feel the spray.

How long you need

One full day covers the falls, one boat or tunnel experience and the walk along the brink. Two days adds Niagara-on-the-Lake, a winery or the Butterfly Conservatory. Most people underestimate the walking: the parkway from Horseshoe Falls to the Whirlpool is several kilometres.

Practical notes

  • Buy tickets online; the boats run every 15 minutes but queues build at midday.
  • Park once and walk, or use the WEGO bus instead of moving the car between attractions.
  • Prices are in Canadian dollars; casinos and hotels add resort fees.
  • In winter some attractions close, but the falls are at their most dramatic with ice build-up.
